Bahrain Banking: How a Small Island Became the GCC's Original Financial Hub

Bahrain pioneered Gulf banking in the 1970s and remains a leading centre for Islamic finance, retail banking and fintech regulation through the Central Bank of Bahrain.

Bahrain's reputation as a financial centre dates back to the mid-1970s, when offshore banking units relocated from Beirut following the Lebanese civil war. The Bahrain Monetary Agency — now the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) — built a single-regulator framework that became a regional reference for prudential supervision.

Bahrain pioneered Islamic finance standardisation through AAOIFI (Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions) and IIFM, and hosts large Islamic banks including Al Baraka Banking Group and Bahrain Islamic Bank. Conventional banking is anchored by Ahli United Bank (now part of Kuwait Finance House), National Bank of Bahrain and BBK.

The CBB Fintech Sandbox — launched in 2017 — was the first dedicated regulatory sandbox in the Middle East. Combined with the Bahrain Bourse (BHB) and a comparatively low cost base, the kingdom continues to position itself as an alternative to Dubai and Riyadh for back-office operations and emerging financial technology firms.
